British Basketball Union

The sport of Basketball in Great Britain is pleased to announce the formation of the British Basketball Union LLP (BBU), a new organisation to promote the commercial development of the sport in Great Britain. With the focus of the sport turning to the London Olympics, and basketball being one of the most high profile team sports at London 2012, the sport of basketball has come together to leverage its organisational capability to ensure that London 2012, and the performance of the Great Britain men's and women's at London 2012, acts as a springboard to the growth of the sport, and thereby ensures a lasting legacy.

The British Basketball Union LLP (BBU) is a commercial partnership between British Performance Basketball, responsible for the Great Britain national teams, the British Basketball League, responsible for the top men's league in Great Britain, and the national governing bodies for England and Scotland, England Basketball and Basketball Scotland.

Basketball in the UK is mainly managed by five organisations each with specific responsibilities:

Each Governing Body has responsibility for the management of the sport in their country. Such responisbilities primarily being leading, supporting and developing the game at all levels, with targeted areas of work including:

  • Club Development
  • Coaching
  • Player Development
  • Officiating
  • National Squads
  • Volunteering
  • Regional Infrastructure & Governance

British Basketball

British Performance Basketball (British Basketball) has been in existence since December 2006; formed in response to the successful London 2012 Olympic bid in 2005 in Singapore. The organisation was created in order to manage the high performance/elite programme for the Great Britain men's and women's senior teams as well as the U20's squads

British Basketball League

The BBL - British Basketball League - is an independent company owned by its member clubs, which runs the top men's professional league in the UK. Each club has an equal shareholding in BBL and has a representative on the BBL Board of Directors, thus is a part of all decision-making. There is a central BBL office, from which league-wide administration, marketing and media is undertaken, although the clubs are spread across the country.
